Which duvet size for which bed?

A duvet that's too small lets cold air in at the sides; one that's too big trails on the floor. Here's how to pick the right one in 2 minutes.

The golden rule: bed width + 40 to 80 cm

A duvet should hang over the mattress on each side, so it still covers you when you turn over, and come down far enough to stop draughts. The simple rule: duvet width = mattress width + 40 to 80 cm, which gives 20 to 40 cm of overhang on each side.

For length, 200 cm is enough for most standard 190 or 200 cm beds. If you're taller than about 6ft 1in (1.85 m), go for the 240 cm length.

The size chart

Our duvets come in European sizes, so the labels won't match UK duvet sizes exactly. Here's how each one fits a UK bed.

Your bedRecommended duvetOverhang per side
UK single, 90 × 190 cm135 × 200 cm22 cm
UK double, 135 × 190 cm200 × 200 cm32 cm
UK king, 150 × 200 cm200 × 200 cm, or 220 × 240 cm for more overhang25 cm, or 35 cm
UK super king, 180 × 200 cm220 × 240 cm20 cm
Good to know for a super kingOur 220 × 240 cm is narrower than a typical UK super king duvet, but longer. On a 180 cm bed it gives you 20 cm on each side, the minimum of our golden rule. If you like a generous drop, bear that in mind.

Fitted sheets and toppers

Our fitted sheets and mattress toppers also come in European sizes. Here's honestly how they sit on a UK mattress.

Pillows and pillowcases: 50 × 70 cm

Our pillows and pillowcases measure 50 × 70 cm. The standard UK pillow is 50 × 75 cm, so they're 5 cm shorter. Our pillowcases are made for our pillows: on a standard 50 × 75 cm UK pillow, they'll be 5 cm too short, so the end of the pillow may peek out.

4 times you should size up

  1. There are two of you and one of you steals the duvet. A few extra centimetres on each side put an end to the night-time tug of war.
  2. Your mattress is deep (more than 25 cm, about 10 in, or with a topper): it uses up some of the overhang.
  3. You like to wrap yourself up in the duvet or sleep curled up on your side.
  4. You want a hotel-bed look, with the duvet falling almost to the base of the bed.
And the other way round?A bed pushed against the wall only needs overhang on one side: the recommended size is plenty, no need to go up.

Measure your bed in 30 seconds

  1. Measure the width of the mattress, edge to edge (90, 135, 150 or 180 cm in most UK homes).
  2. Measure its depth, including any topper.
  3. Check the chart, and go up a size if the depth is over 25 cm.
